A New View

 Although I use my email calendar function to keep track of my schedule, I still hang a wall calendar on my office wall. It's decoration, and I look forward to flipping that page each month. Similarly, I now look forward to a new piece of desktop wallpaper art for my computer every month, and the new images from the June issue of The Pastel Journal are now ready. The two paintings (shown here) are: Jimmy Wright's floral,  Pompeii No. 7 (top; pastel, 29x41) and Rick Stevens' Divine Convergence (pastel, 24x30). Download them for your own computer desktop at our website. Congratulations to Flora Giffuni

 This week, Floral Giffuni (pictured at left with Urania Christy Tarbet and myself at the 34th annual "Pastels Only" awards dinner in 2006) will receive the prestigious Salmagundi Medal of Honor in recognition of her tremendous achievements as an artist and arts supporter. As both the founder of the Pastel Society of America (PSA) and the patron of the Flora B. Giffuni Gallery for Pastels at the Butler Institute of American
Art, Giffuni has been a tireless champion for pastel. Explaining, in a June 2007 feature in The Pastel Journal, the motivation for creating a national pastel society back in 1972, Giffuni said: "I realized how few people knew or respected pastel. It became my life's mission to do something about correcting the problem." Claudia Seymour, President of the Salmagundi Club, will award the medal to Giffuni at the Club's President's Dinner on April 23rd. Rae Smith, President of PSA; Jimmy Wright, PSA treasurer; and O. Alden James, president of the National Arts
Club, will offer tributes.  Please join me in congratulating Ms. Giffuni on this tremendous honor. It is certain that the current positioning of pastel in today's art world would not look the same had it not been for her efforts. A Pixar Artist Goes Plein Air

 Bill Cone, a designer at Pixar Studios, has been supplementing his movie work over these last 13 years with pastel landscape painting (see Shadowed Face, at left). Now he's ready for the opening night of his first one-man show at the Studio Gallery in San Francisco. The show, built around Cone's four years of painting in the Sierra Nevada mountains, runs from April 15 through May 10. Visit the gallery website to find out more and to view a slide show of work from the show.  A show catalog, Light, Water & Granite, will be available at the gallery and through Cone's blog. Cone's work at Pixar was the subject of a feature that appeared in the March 2008 issue of The Artist's Magazine. Fun on a Monday

 Yes, we may have outgrown Mr. Potato Head, but that doesn't mean we've lost our sense of play. If you're in need of some playtime, try an online version of the preschool game with just enough of an art connection to get some laughs. At MrPicassoHead.com, you can make a Picasso Head, instead of a Potato Head, and you can check out a gallery of work by other online players, too. Sure, it's nonsense, but who can't use five minutes of that on a Monday!

New York City Pastels in New Orleans

Despite the unfortunate (and irritating) use of the term, chalk pastel, to describe the medium used in this work, it looks like an interesting show. I like the idea of transporting one neighborhood (NYC's Chinatown) to another (New Orlean's Claude Artist District). It might just be the excuse I need to drive over to New Orleans next weekend and hit every gallery in sight. It's only a few hundred miles away, after all...

Today is the birthday of Vincent van Gogh (March 30, 1853). Many of the artist's famous musings, like the quote above, reflect on the importance of risk-taking in the making of art. The occasion of his birth seems a good day to pause and reflect: What risks have you taken to make a place for art in your life? What risks have you taken in your painting that have lead to significant artistic breakthroughs?
To submerge yourself in all things van Gogh, check out the Van Gogh Gallery website with a catalog of paintings, biography, letters, quotes, free downloads, an online shop and a community gallery where you can see a copy of Starry Night on the side of a horse!
